Volunteer Opportunities

The following is a partial list of opportunities. Please fill out a volunteer inquiry form, and we will contact you for an interview. Please call Michael Coughlin at 802-660-9130, ext. 104 with any questions.

First Aid and CPR Instructor

Description: Teach classes on first aid, infant CPR, child CPR, and adult CPR. Skills: CPR and First Aid certification and trainer certification, which can be provided by the Red Cross if the volunteer is not already qualified, people/social skills, ability to talk in front of people.

 

Babysitting Instructor

Description: Teach classes in babysitting to groups ages 11 and up. Skills: Experience in babysitting or childcare preferred but not required, babysitter trainer certification (which can be provided by the Red Cross if necessary), people/social skills, ability to talk in front of people, ability to work with children.

 

Bandage kit Folder

Volunteer will organize and refold bandage kits used for first aid classes. Training will be provided. Hours are flexible and based on need for kits to be restocked - work at the Chapter or from home. Skills: reliability and ability to lift and carry 15-20 lb boxes. If working from home, the volunteer must have transportation to pick up supplies from the Chapter and drop off the finished kits.

Lifeguard Trainer

Description: Needs to teach classes that will certify students for Life guarding. Skills: Lifeguard trainer certification (which can be provided by the Red Cross if necessary), people/social skills, ability to talk in front of people.

Swimming Instructor (Summer Only)

Description: Volunteer needed to provide swim instruction to groups of various ages and skill levels. Skills: Communication skills, swimming ability (extent of ability necessary will vary with skill level of class), enjoy working with children

Disaster Action Team Member

Description: Volunteers needed to respond to single and multi-family fires, floods, winter storms and other emergencies. Flexibility required, willingness to respond at all hours when on call. Numerous opportunities available. Skills: Good organizational skills, interpersonal skills, ability to be a self starter, training will be provided.

Disaster Services Volunteer

Description: Volunteers are needed in various functions within the Disaster Services department for both local and national response. Skills: Ability to be a self-starter, willingness and availability to be engaged in disaster services.

Service Committee Member

Description: Serve on the service committee with paid and volunteer staff and members of the board of directors to develop policies, provide oversight, and participate in projects and initiatives. Skills: Well organized, excellent communicator with relevant experience or subject matter expertise.

 

Help needed with writing grant proposals

An experienced grant proposal writer is needed to help the Chapter identify and apply for appropriate grants for Chapter-wide support and also for specific program/educational initiatives. We have a variety of exciting projects and community awareness campaigns we will be seeking funding for. An experienced grant writer is an integral member of our team as we work to reach families with preparedness and safety programs. Skills: The volunteer will have the full support of a staff member but should also be able to work independently.

Human Resources committee member

Description: A volunteer with Human Resources experience is needed to serve on the Chapter HR Committee, a committee of Board members and volunteers that is responsible for overseeing the Chapter's personnel and compensation policies, participation in benefit programs, and policies for development of employees and volunteers. The Committee also advises the Board on grievance resolutions and other significant human resources issues. The Committee is responsible for monitoring and evaluating the work of the chapter employees and volunteers to secure, support and develop the personnel necessary to accomplish the work of the chapter. Skills: The volunteer must have HR experience. The skills and interests of the volunteer should be sufficient to address the critical human resources areas such as organization development, job and compensation design, work-force analysis and planning, training, employee relations and performance planning and review.

Financial development & public relations Committee Member

Description: Serve on the financial development and public relations committee with paid and volunteer staff and members of the board of directors to develop policies, provide oversight, and participate in projects and initiatives. Skills: Well organized, excellent communicator with relevant experience or subject matter expertise.
