RED CROSS RESPONDS TO SUPPORT NORTHEAST KINGDOM HAZARDOUS
MATERIALS RESPONSE

(Orleans, Vermont – January 10, 2008) The return of the more seasonal
cold temperatures of a Vermont winter finds Red Cross volunteers busy supporting
the rehabilitation needs of some 75 state and local emergency officials
tonight who have responded to a hazardous materials event in the Northeast
Kingdom village of Orleans. The volunteers are all members of the Northern
Vermont Chapter’s Disaster Action Team program.
First responders were originally notified around 3:45 pm of the incident
and the Red Cross’ Orleans County Disaster Action Team was called
into action around 5:30 pm to respond and support the rehabilitation needs
of the firefighters and other responders on scene. “We have been serving
full meals together with a steady flow of hot and cold beverages so desperately
needed by emergency workers in these types of situations.” says Red
Cross County Coordinator Adam Heuslein. Heuslein goes on to say, “It
is through the support of the entire community that we are able to respond
to emergencies like this one throughout our area. "
The Red Cross is prepared to be on scene for as long as it takes and additional
members of the county team are on stand-by should they be needed to support
operations.
The mission of the American Red Cross, Northern Vermont Chapter is to provide
relief to victims of disasters and help our community prevent, prepare for
and respond to emergencies. The chapter also teaches children and adults
how to save lives through first aid, CPR and AED training, water safety
instruction, and community safety education.
