Disaster ServicesYou Can Help! Each year, the American Red Cross responds immediately to more than 67,000 disasters, including house or apartment fires (the majority of disaster responses), hurricanes, floods, earthquakes, tornadoes, hazardous materials spills, transportation accidents, explosions, and other natural and man-made disasters. These efforts can not be made without the help of people like you. There are more than 170,000 Red Cross disaster volunteers. Young and old, from all geographic areas, and all economic levels, everyone, including you, has something to offer. For more information on what you can do, check out our Wish List page. Disaster Action Teams (DAT)The Northern Vermont Chapter is currently looking for people who want to help out with their Disaster Action Teams. These local Disaster Action Teams respond to local emergencies. Their usual service ranges from providing a recovery area for local firefighters while battling a fire, helping families out after a fire, and setting up and operating emergency shelters. Training for these classes are free and offered year round (class times can be viewed here). In less than one day you could have the training necessary to start on a path of helping others in times of need. The Red Cross also feeds emergency workers, handles inquiries from concerned family members outside the disaster area, provides blood and blood products to disaster victims, and helps those affected by disaster to access other available resources.
