(Hartford, Vermont - April 15, 2010) – In an effort to raise funds to support critical disaster relief and life saving training programs, the American Red Cross announced today that volunteers will SWIM THE LONG TRAIL at the Upper Valley Aquatic Center in Hartford, Vermont on June 5th. Adopting a novel approach to “hiking” the Long Trail, volunteers plan to swim a distance equal to the 209 mile long iconic trail to bring attention to the vital mission of the organization and raise funds to make sure that local Red Cross volunteers have the tools they need to support their neighbors in their hour of greatest need.
Len Angelli, athletic trainer at Dartmouth College and a long time Red Cross volunteer said, “We are putting out the call to all swimmers, swim teams and local organizations to help us launch this fun event, we hope it will become an annual part of the summer swim season.” He added, “with the support of our friends at the Upper Valley Aquatic Center, White River Toyota, and a host of local companies, there will be free food, fun and activities for all participants.”
The Vermont and New Hampshire Valley region of the American Red Cross plays a vital role in helping people to prevent, prepare for and respond to emergencies. In addition to training thousands in live saving skills across our region each year, the American Red Cross provides disaster assistance, all at no cost, to community members at their hour of greatest need. These services range from shelter and food, to clothing and medicine. Red Cross disaster services are supported by the generosity of donors.
“Swim the Long Trail” will be held on June 5, 2010 at The Upper Valley Aquatic Center, in Hartford Vermont. Interested swimmers and volunteers are asked to contact Eric Cochran, at 802-660-9130 x112, or in Vermont 800-660-9130 x112.
