(Adamant, Vermont - May 4, 2010) Red Cross volunteers are wrapping up support operations in the central Vermont village of Adamant after a beaver dam from a pond broke last night forcing local residents from their homes. Red Cross disaster relief workers were first called to the scene shortly after water came rushing through the center of the village at about 7:30 pm.
Local volunteers from the Central Vermont/New Hampshire Valley chapter opened a shelter at the East Montpelier Elementary School to make sure residents had a safe and secure gathering point as evacuations continued. Throughout the night Red Cross volunteers supported emergency personal from a number of surrounding towns with food and hydration as they continued to support displaced local residents. During the night the situation was stabilized and the shelter was closed. One local resident who was unable to return to their home is being helped by the Red Cross with short-term lodging.
